Memoirs of a Rapist

On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists raped and murdered hundreds of civilians including Jews, Arabs, tourists and workers. They kidnapped teenagers. They kidnapped children. Leftists were all over Bluesky and social media celebrating. Apparently shooting a family or raping a teenager is fine as long as you can frame it as “decolonization” or “the resistance”. The next day, before Israel even started the counterattack, these same Leftists were accusing Israel of genocide. Hamas propaganda was celebrating real dead babies and screaming about imaginary dead babies. Privileged white people who cultivated an image of being empathetic caring individuals condemned Israel for not allowing Hamas to murder and rape more Jews.

The list of individuals who cheered on Hamas and continue to cheer on Hamas while condemning Israel is long and painful. Mary Gaitskill is on that list. Her entire substack is all about how she's a GOOD PERSON who would have SUPPORTED ISRAEL if only ISRAEL didn't commit GENOCIDE. Look at all the same buildings. Mary Gaitskill is one of those NPR interviewed authors who spent her entire life talking about how her stories are about difficult topics having to do with sexuality.

After October 7, she finally took her head out of her own vagina long enough to hate on Jews with modern blood libel.

The first time I read this story, I did not know that she was still alive. I only knew a few of the authors in this collection and their biographies was half the fun. I found the story creepy but I gave her the benefit of the doubt, because “art should be disturbing” and all the excuses we make when we encounter the literary equivalent of the guy trying to grope you in Penn Station.

I re-read the story for this article and I have to wonder if Mary Gaitskill had blackmail material on the editors. There's nothing redeemable about this story. It's the story of a bullying asshole who harasses other middle school girls to the point that she's disappointed that one doesn't commit suicide. It ends with the girl raping her friend with a toothbrush.

None of the characters are believable. The whole thing is full of dull sentences like “there was only a small group of boys who weren't afraid of them, on account of their being so tough” and convoluted bullshit like “the assigned classroom was filled with murderously aggressive boys and rigid girls with terrible animal eyes who threw spitballs, punched each other, snarled, whispered, and stared one another down.”

Since Mary Gaitskill is not a stylist and certainly not a writer of characters, one must conclude that this “story” is an extended confession of her middle school years. One wonders how many girls she raped with toothbrushes. Her perspective character doesn't feel shame or remorse. She just thinks about how she doesn't want anyone looking at her vagina. Mary Gaitskill ends her confession by stating that she would one day be perfectly happy letting people look at her vagina.

Because when you're a rapist, you really need that validation.

Before I re-read this story I hated Mary Gaitskill. Now, I despise her. Apparently, she isn't just a stupid privileged white idiot spouting Hamas propaganda because she doesn't like seeing bombed out buildings. She's spouting Hamas propaganda, because she sees nothing wrong with rape. Hamas raped teenagers. Mary Gaitskill most likely raped 12-year old girls and wrote fond memoirs of her crimes.

Hopefully, she'll die soon. She really has nothing to offer.
