Job Chapters 21-23
Critical Thinking is Fun. You Should Try It.
In the last Job article (chapter 34), I received the following comment: ”This type of fear mongering content is the problem with Christianity. Jessus would be appalled!” In the article, I talked about Elihu being an asshole. If there was fear mongering the major threat was “some day you will remember being a smug asshole and it will haunt you.” I did mention Jerry Falwell saying evil shit about AIDS victims but there was no way to read that part to think that I approved of the vulgar little toad.
Also, I’m Jewish and I don’t give a flying fuck what Jesus would think. He’s dead. And if the Gospel of John is anything to go on, I know what he thinks about Jews and he can shove it. Either way, my “Elihu might not be wrong but he’s definitely an asshole” was completely misread to the point that I don’t even know what the fuck the person thought they were reading.
Anyhow, Chapters 21-23 of Iyov (Job) are Job’s response to Zohar, the last big speech by one of Job’s friends (Eliphaz) and then Job responding to Eliphaz. It gets repetitive by this point so I did have to struggle to find some original stuff to say about it.
For Chapter 21, I focused on the way that we fool ourselves into believing stupid shit, not because we are stupid (we are but that’s besides the point) but we want to believe that the stupid shit is true. Job is fighting this trend.
In chapter 22, Eliphaz is full of himself. He’s not just being Eliphaz the caring friend who is really fucking wrong about everything. He’s Eliphaz the guy who thinks that he’s a prophet. Happily this is his last chapter. Sadly, Elihu is even worse.
Of course, I also included a picture of my teenage self. Look at me. I’m so fucking adorable. With those cheekbones and that pouty mouth. Too bad my personality was so bad, else I would have had so much sex as a teenager. I was also a weird kid with undiagnosed ADHD but don’t you just want to grab young Tim and molest him?
Finally, we have Job starting his two chapter dissection of Eliphaz. Job is going to get a lot more time to talk. At least until Elihu comes along and won’t STFU. Spoiler for later chapters or the articles that I just wrote.
Ok. So you might have noticed that I have been posting more articles that are mostly links to previous articles. Pesach is coming. Cleaning my place for Pesach is always time consuming. Also the Ozempic is energy sucking. Anyhow, here’s an article on Pesach. I’ll be writing one during Pesach but that will have a different tone.
