When I started my Substack, I transferred my Medium articles over and then let it lay fallow for a few years. Medium was my original attempt to make money self-publishing and I spent weeks on every article, writing and revising and trying to get them perfect so that one of the Medium editors bestowed the “Featured Article” status upon it.
That didn’t happen. So no one paid the Medium subscription to read my articles. If paid Medium people read my articles, I got a few pennies but that didn’t exactly help me retire from the Term Paper racket. I was really hoping to jump into a better market before ChatGPT forced me out.
Recently, I’ve had reason to start sharing those articles. Namely, that motherfucker Cuomo is running for Mayor. I also need to figure out who is running for mayor since the important primary is coming up. Thus far, the only mayor candidates I know about are Motherfucker Cuomo and that antisemitic leftist that would have been very popular before all the blood libel accusations coming out of Columbia University and that Sex and the City actress.
If either of those guys wins the Democratic primary, I’m going to have to vote for Adams. And I fucking hate Adams, but not as much as I hate Cuomo. Cuomo gave the nursing homes de facto permission to run at a dangerously understaffed volume during the worst days of Covid-19. Then he spent months hiding those inevitable deaths. I don’t care about his sex pest actions as much as the fact that my mom died alone and afraid because of that guy.
Andrew Cuomo killed my Mother
The greatest trick Covid-19 ever pulled was to convince the public that Andrew Cuomo was anything but a corporate puppet. The governor who blocked effective rent relief, gutted the subway system and exploited prison labor spent 2020 basking in the praise of liberals and progressives for the very low bar of not being Trump.
Also in my older articles is one about diversity in Science Fiction, particularly the ways that there have always been women and minority writers, even during the so-called Golden Age when Asimov and Heinlein dominated the scene (and the historical beliefs).
This article is mostly a call to seek out interesting and fun science fiction writers from before the 1970s (and the 1970s) who nominally get lost to the histories. I was inspired by reading Cordwainer Smith for the first time and by GRRM cluelessly praising John W. Campbell when we were finally coming to terms with his racist legacy. (GRRM also apparently signed that anti-Zionist letter that was going around. Seriously dude STFU and finish Winds of Winter).
Science Fiction has always been Greater than Campbell
In the official history of science fiction, early 20th century pulp writers wrote manly men being manly on their rocket ships. John W. Campbell was the master publisher. They created the GOLDEN AGE. Eventually the GIANTS of Science Fiction — Isaac Asimov
When thinking about interesting science fiction of the past, no Generation X nerd can avoid Piers Anthony. For many reasons, major publishers pushed this creepy pedophile guy onto children. His Xanth books were full of bad puns like dollarpedes being 100 times as bad as centipedes. I guess someone thought we’d like that when we were children, and didn’t notice all the pedophile bullshit? Seriously, I was 11 when I started reading him so I didn’t see anything wrong with a character lusting after a 14 year old girl, but someone with a high school degree should have read that and went “woah, are we actually publishing this shit?” long before Xanth books ended up in every B. Dalton display and library’s YA section.
Anyhow, Piers Anthony kept getting away with his misogynist pedophile subtext that he went and made it text with Bio of a Space Tyrant, a series that begins with a rape that he writes like it’s supposed to be erotic and then gets even more rancid. Sadly, he would have many more years being heavily pushed by the publishing industry before he wrote Firefly, a book that went too far even for Del Rey.

Ok, that’s it. Enjoy my older articles. There are a lot of links in them because Medium wanted those links. I have other older articles, but they are mostly Covid-19 related (anyone still remember Judy Mikovits) or book reviews or attacks on Aaron Sorkin (who took enough of a beating for his awful Camelot adaptation).
I’m still looking for work so if you have a novel to edit or a resume to revise
I could also use some money, so feel free to donate to my gofundme.
I just googled Mayoral candidates and the first candidate I could find that wasn’t Cuomo or Adams or endorsed by the anti-semitic Working Families Party (fuck those guys) is Michael Blake. Check him out.
