Paul wanted a shared future with her. He saw PTA meetings. He saw Saturday nights spent watching movies and eating pizza. He kissed Agatha and thought about the city.

“OK, let's do this,” he said.

“Do you believe me?” she said.

“Yes,” said Paul.

In March, the Hlavac twins walked into a diner in Hibbing. They asked to call their parents. They were wearing the same clothes from their pictures; they smelled clean. Jenny Hlavac stared unblinking at the waitress. Jamie called home. Jamie was hungry. Jenny didn't smile.

When they thought that no one was looking, both girls put live mice in their mouths. Neither attempted to actually swallow. Jamie easily integrated back into the school. Jenny entered a special school. Neither girl gave up their captors. They acted as if they had just wandered off for a couple of hours. They repeatedly said “I am sorry." Jamie said it more emphatically.

In May, Paul registered for that last required science class and filed the graduating paperwork. He was also began applying for insurance agent jobs and sales jobs as far away as Madison. He even contemplated asking his father for help.
