Read Part 14

In the spring of the Han Dynasty, when the united country divided and then united, White Snake found Green Snake; Greenie was the size of an oak tree. She rampaged through villages, eating villagers and rice carts. When Green Snake came upon White Snake, she was at her most fearsome, stuffed with horses and cattle and mice. For just a second Greenie hissed. When Bai Suzhen gazed upon the great monster, she shrieked with laughter. Green Snake was quite the beauty.

“What are you?” said the Green Snake.

Bai Suzhen threw off her humanity. As she grew in shape, Greenie saw the beautiful pale woman in white robes become a terrible beast. Then Bai Suzhen returned to the shape of a woman frisky and light.

“Greenie,” said White Snake with dreamy eyes and bright fangs, “we could be enemies, great powerful beings of merciless power destroying villages and each other. The humans should tremble at our battles.”

"Like Godzilla vs. Mothra," said Greenie.

"Or Abbot vs. Costello," said White Suzhen.

"Plessy v. Ferguson."

"Falwell v. Hustler."

“We should be friends,” said Greenie.

“Yes,” said White Snake, “Let us be friends.”

“May we still fight and destroy villages? They need not know that we are only slapping away their markets and devouring thatched roofs for amusement.”

“Maybe.”

“You could show me how to become human.”

“Sit with me,” said White Snake.
