While Waiting for New Articles, Read these High Risk articles
Dennis Cooper, Kathy Acker and Essex Hemphill
Sorry for the delay in getting a new article out. The Iyov article is all about the hippo and the John Cheever story (Death of Justina) is much deeper than I initially thought. Also, my life has been chaos. I did get a Background Acting Job for a couple days but I also have been playing games for Free Cash bonuses and that’s a time consuming issue that requires a lot of work before the good payments come in. Also I have just opened a notice of eviction from a marshal (she didn’t serve it, just mailed it so that can’t be legal) and I’m going to go to court tomorrow to see what I can do. That’s been coming for a long time since ChatGPT killed my best income source and I’ve been treading water and falling behind on my rent for years. (Please donate to my gofundme if you can.) Also Nothing in the Basement came out last week and I’m trying to promote that book.
So in order to make sure that you guys read something and know that you are getting your money’s worth. Here are some articles that I wrote about High Risk stories.
The first one is Dennis Cooper’s “Wrong” which is all about gay serial killers and the things we do for love. It’s a horror story but it’s categorized as literary so I mostly talk about the ways that Dennis Cooper could have been marketed as a writer throughout his career.
"Wrong" by Dennis Cooper (High Risk)
I should have heard about Dennis Cooper years ago. He writes extreme horror. I publish horror. I read horror. I grew up reading Stephen King and watching slasher movies. Only Dennis Cooper was writing for the literary audiences. Instead of selling his serial killer tales to Cemetery Dance or Weird Tales, he was putting out punk zines and winning literar…
Next up is Kathy Acker. Kathy Acker is an interesting writer that I feel like I would have loved had I read her when my friend gave my a copy of one of her books during Freshman year in college. I might have gotten sick of her, but I would have good memories of enjoying her books (which is my relationship to Tom Robbins). That said, I did enjoy this story about a girl whose father wants to sacrifice her to art.
"A Young Girl" by Kathy Acker (High Risk)
I feel like I should love Kathy Acker. She was a take no prisoners, no fucks given, always innovating radical writer. I should at least praise her for pioneering a version of cut-and-paste that is more akin to sampling than the unintelligible word salads of William S. Burroughs. The fact that I use a similar technique when writing my stories (thank you …
And finally there’s Essex Hemphill who was done a disservice by this anthology. His work is much more varied than a story that calls out the black community for black on black crime. This article is still beautifully written but I wish that the editors had chosen something different.
"Heavy Breathing" by Essex Hemphill (High Risk)
As a Jew, I have a guaranteed path to publication. Just pitch an article shitting all over Israel with the requisite buzz words (apartheid, genocide, ethnostate, etc) and dozens of left-leaning publications would buy it. I'd make even more money if my grandparent had been Holocaust survivors. Selling out the entire Jewish community is a lucrative and ea…

Like I said, the new Dybbuk Press book has come out. It’s called Nothing in the Basement. You can contribute to the Indiegogo Campaign for a Signed copy.
It’s also available at Barnes & Noble.
