You got me interested. I was a songwriter from the 80s until Covid then put down my guitar and wrote two books. Both are still in process. I don’t know much about literature and even less about the short story. Don’t know Cheever at all. Thanks for the intro and link to your book too - checking it out! I’ll finish my dad’s book after I finish my novel. Stay tuned pls.

I love Cheever and this is a very interesting and perceptive look at what he was doing. This story may have been uncharacteristic in some ways, or arguably a minor effort, but I think you can learn a lot about an artist from the work that doesn’t tower over you. Nice essay! Reminds me that I need to go back and read him some more.

Thank you. I had dismissed him as an Updike or salinger clone before I read his stories. I have been pleasantly surprised at how weird he can get.
